PM restructures departments to boost the economy

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has broken up the department of business, energy and industrial strategy (BEIS) as part of a wider shake-up of Government departments.

As part of the reorganisation, a combined department of business and trade will focus on supporting growth by "promoting investment and championing free trade".

Meanwhile, a dedicated department for science, innovation and technology will aim to deliver better public services, create new jobs and grow the economy.

The new department for culture, media and sport will also focus on the importance of sports and the arts to our economy, building on the UK's position as a "global leader in the creative arts".

As Sunak promised during his leadership campaign last summer, there will also be a standalone department for energy - headed up by previous BEIS chair Grant Shapps.

According to the Government, the department for energy security and net zero will focus on securing the UK's long-term supply, bringing down bills and halving inflation:

"The move recognises the significant impact rising prices have had on households across the country and the need to secure more energy from domestic nuclear and renewable sources as we seize the opportunities of net zero."
